UNC-Chapel Hill’s celebration of Martin Luther King Jr.’s life will include opportunities for service, a community banquet and a lecture by Andrew Young.

This year’s theme is “The Time is Now: Our Legacy, Our Future.” Events begin Sunday, Jan. 15 with the 27th annual University/Community Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Banquet. The week will wrap up on Friday, Jan. 20, with an event inspired by the Langston Hughes poem “I, Too, Sing America” at 6:30 p.m.

The Jan. 16 MLK Day for Service will allow individuals to serve the community. Volunteers have been signing up to work on a variety of projects since late November.

Civil rights activist and statesman Andrew Young will deliver the 31st annual Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Lecture on Jan. 17 at 7:30 p.m. in Memorial Hall.
