Dear Chapel Hill Community,
In our grief over the tragic death of Dr. Feng Liu, whose life was taken last week during a robbery, we join together as a town and campus community to give each other support.
Last night, many of you had the opportunity to attend a vigil to remember Dr. Liu sponsored by the Chinese-American Friendship Association, and a memorial service will be held on Saturday.
We know that many of you have safety concerns. Although Chapel Hill remains a safe community, random acts of violence may make us feel vulnerable. As always, we recommend our residents, including students, take normal personal safety precautions. These include being aware of your general surroundings and reporting anything suspicious by calling 911.
The Town of Chapel Hill and the University are tightly interwoven law enforcement jurisdictions. Some of our partnerships include the Community Safety Partnership (http://bit.ly/1uHOlrq), Neighborhood Watch (http://bit.ly/ULQxNP), CrimeStoppers (http://bit.ly/1byjkrj), SAFE Kids Orange County (http://bit.ly/1qnUJ0x), and an upcoming National Night Out (http://bit.ly/1s4VBZT) event. A list of safety programs and tips can be found at BeSafe (http://besafe.unc.edu/), Safe@UNC (http://safe.unc.edu/), as well as the Alert Carolina (http://www.alertcarolina.unc.edu) and Town of Chapel Hill (http://bit.ly/1qnWL0t) websites. Please know the increased number of alerts sent by Alert Carolina is intended to make the campus community more aware and informed about criminal activity.
Our commitment to you, as we grieve the loss of Dr. Liu, will be to continue to talk about these issues and do all we can to maintain community safety. Your partnership is essential.
We ask that you join us in remembering Dr. Liu’s family, friends and colleagues in your thoughts and prayers.
Sincerely,
Carol L. Folt Mark Kleinschmidt
Chancellor Mayor
