Amber Mathwig, a 10-year United States Navy veteran, has been hired as Carolina’s first student veteran assistance coordinator to help ensure that service members and veterans have the resources they need to succeed at UNC-Chapel Hill, Chancellor Carol L. Folt and Vice Chancellor Winston Crisp announced. Mathwig joined the Office of the Dean of Students on Sept. 1. This position is one of several initiatives Folt announced in May to enhance support for military-affiliated students.

In this role, Mathwig will be a primary point of contact for Carolina’s military-affiliated students, including veterans, active duty personnel, reservists, National Guard, spouses and dependents to support and assist them as they navigate their UNC-Chapel Hill experience. She will work collaboratively with the campus and local veteran and military communities to provide high-impact programming and services to ease the transition to campus and promote a positive Carolina experience. Further, this position will play an integral role in the establishment of an on-campus veterans’ resource center.

Mathwig comes to UNC-Chapel Hill from UNC-Greensboro where she was one of a small team of individuals who saw the establishment of the Veterans Resource Center at UNC-Greensboro become a reality. She is a veteran of the United States Navy where she served as a master-at-arms. After leaving the military, she obtained a Bachelor’s degree in sociology and is currently completing her Master’s degree at UNC-Greensboro. Her research has focused on the study of military culture.

Mathwig has demonstrated a passion for and commitment to enhancing the university experience of the military-affiliated student population. She seeks to recognize and promote the rich and diverse experiences the military-affiliated population bring to campus, and to empower each student in navigating the university system and their Veterans Affairs education benefits. She looks forward to the opportunity to serve the students of UNC-Chapel Hill.
