Commencement weekend features the Doctoral Hooding Ceremony on May 12 in the Smith Center and the Commencement ceremony on May 13 in Kenan Stadium.
Please note that because of overwhelming demand for disability seating for Commencement at Kenan Stadium, disability seating is limited to one guest and one accompanying family member or friend. Please allow extra time for transport to the field, as requests for this service have exceeded capacity.
The University thanks you for your understanding.
Information about Hooding and Commencement.
If showers are forecast for May 13, attendees should come prepared for wet conditions in the stadium. Umbrellas will be permitted. If it rains, the ceremony will be shortened, but not relocated. If severe weather threatens and attendees’ safety is at risk, the ceremony will be canceled because there is no alternative site large enough to accommodate the expected 30,000 attendees.
No tickets are needed for the Hooding ceremony.
New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg will deliver the Commencement address. Chancellor Holden Thorp will preside during the ceremony. Bloomberg and four others — David S. Ferriero, Thomas W. Lambeth, Branford Marsalis, Katharine Lee Reid — will receive honorary degrees.
During Commencement, a live web stream will be broadcast for those who cannot attend. The Hooding Ceremony will also be shown live via web stream.
Within a few days after the ceremony, Commencement and Hooding video highlights will be on UNC’s YouTube channel
Marc Levoy — a Stanford computer science professor whose career achievements include developing the cartoon animation system used in “The Flintstones” TV show and launching Google’s Street View project — will be the keynote speaker for the Hooding ceremony.
Video of both events will be available on UNC’s YouTube channel within a few days.
