Early voting for the 2016 election runs Oct. 20 through Nov. 5. Remember that same-day registration is available during early voting. The deadline to register to vote on Election Day has passed.

To register to vote during the early voting period, be sure to bring proof of residency, showing your name and current address. If you live in a dorm, Orange County election officials have been provided a dorm roster, so you may show your One Card as proof of residency.

If you are registered to vote in Orange County, or are eligible to use same-day registration at an Orange County early voting site, the closest early voting location to campus is Chapel of the Cross, 304 E. Franklin St. (next to Morehead Planetarium). It is open the following days and times:

  • Monday-Friday, Oct. 24 – 28, Noon – 7 p.m.
  • Saturday, Oct. 29, 9 a.m. – 4 p.m.
  • Monday, Oct. 31, Noon – 5 p.m.
  • Tuesday, Nov. 1, Noon – 7 p.m.
  • Wednesday – Friday, Nov. 2 – Nov. 4, Noon – 7:30 p.m.
  • Saturday, Nov. 5, 8 a.m. – 1 p.m.

Please check the Orange County Board of Elections website, or your home county’s Board of Elections website, for more information about early voting locations and hours. During early voting, you may vote at any early voting location in your county of residence. You may also request a mail-in absentee ballot from https://www.ncsbe.gov/absentee-voting-mail.

As a reminder to faculty and staff, UNC employees are prohibited by law (N.C. General Statute 126-13) and UNC Board of Governors’ policy from using the authority of their positions or from using state funds, supplies or vehicles to secure support for or to oppose any candidate, party or issue in an election.

The University takes seriously the right of each person on campus to express personal opinions on matters of public concern. We also take seriously our obligation to comply with federal and state laws and UNC policies and to serve as responsible stewards of the public resources entrusted to us.

If you have questions about permissible political activity for employees, additional guidance is posted at http://hr.unc.edu/2016/06/10/reminders-about-university-employees-and-political-activities/.
