The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill hosted a delegation from Eberhard Karls Universität Tübingen led by President and Vice-Chancellor Bernd Engler Sept. 9-11.

Engler and the delegation visited UNC-Chapel Hill from Germany as part of their Research World Tour to develop collaborations with key institutional partners. They were welcomed by Chancellor Carol L. Folt and Ron Strauss, executive vice provost and chief international officer.

UNC-Chapel Hill collaborators in the Departments of Biology, Germanic and Slavic Languages and Literatures, Environmental Sciences and Engineering, the Eshelman School of Pharmacy, and the Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center hosted the Tübingen faculty members. In addition to exploring possible research and academic collaborations, the Tübingen faculty members presented on their research, with lecture topics ranging from contemporary German photography to target discovery in gastrointestinal tumors.

“We are very happy to have had the opportunity to host our Tübingen colleagues and have them share their cutting-edge research in areas such as pharmacy and public health with Carolina faculty and students,” said Chancellor Carol L. Folt.

“We look forward to continuing our partnership and expanding our collaborative efforts with one of Europe’s leading and historic research universities.”

Carolina has a longstanding partnership with Tübingen. A student exchange program was initiated between the universities in 1986, and faculty and students in Germanic languages and literatures and American studies have been actively engaged in exchanges and collaborations for several years.

The visit built on prior visits to Carolina by President Engler and delegations from Tübingen in April of 2014 and 2012, as well as a June 2015 visit to Tübingen by Chancellor Folt. President Engler also spent time at UNC-Chapel Hill as a research fellow in American studies from 1991 to 1992.
