Chancellor Carol L. Folt met with students participating in the exchange program between the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and Eberhard Karls Universität Tübingen (Tübingen) while in Germany this week. Folt is visiting Tübingen in conjunction with her service on Tübingen’s International Advisory Board.

Tübingen is one of Europe’s oldest universities. It was founded in 1477 and in 2012 was designated a “University of Excellence” by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF). The university has been recognized for its strengths in a range of areas, especially in medicine and the life sciences.

“One of the most exciting aspects of working with partner universities is being a part of the growth of an institution beyond one’s own,” Folt said. “It’s truly an honor to be a part of Tübingen’s advisory board. I’m looking forward to the work we’ll accomplish together and to seeing the relationship between our universities deepen.”

Folt met with UNC-Chapel Hill students Meredith Hunter and Kevin Schulze, both of whom are currently on exchange at Tübingen, as well as Chantal Muthmann and Jana Kneissl, Tübingen students who will study at Carolina on exchange in August 2015. Also attending the dinner was Nici Sauer, director of student exchange at Tübingen. Sauer spent a year at UNC-Chapel Hill on exchange while an undergraduate student at Tübingen.

“Student exchange is one critical way that Carolina strengthens partnerships abroad,” Folt said. “When I’m visiting partner universities, I’m always delighted to meet with students participating in study abroad. It’s a valuable opportunity to learn about the great work that students do while on exchange.”

Folt was invited to serve on Tübingen’s International Advisory Board during President Bernd Engler’s visit to Chapel Hill in April 2014. The board is helping the university shape its future by focusing on international benchmarking, peer-reviewing and long-term strategic planning.

In early September, UNC-Chapel Hill will host President Engler and a delegation of Tübingen faculty as part of their Research World Tour. Delegates are expected to meet with UNC researchers in the areas of biology, geosciences, infectious diseases, cancer and German to explore opportunities to deepen collaboration between the universities.
