The “9/11 NEVER FORGET” mobile exhibit will visit the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill on Tuesday, Sept. 22. The exhibit — which is housed in a high-tech, 53-foot tractor-trailer that unfolds into a 1,000 square foot exhibit — serves as a poignant reminder of September 11, 2001, and honors those who lost their lives on that tragic, yet heroic, day in American history.
The visit of the mobile exhibit to Carolina is being hosted by the UNC College Republicans organization.
The exhibit will be located in the Hanes parking area, off Cameron Avenue, between Memorial Hall and the YMCA, and will be open for one day from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. An opening ceremony, which will begin with the singing of the National Anthem, is scheduled for 11 a.m. The entire campus community and members of the general public are invited to attend the opening ceremony and admission to the mobile exhibit is free.
This memorial to heroism and dedication to duty provides interactive education, including artifacts such as steel beams from the towers, documentary videos and recordings of first responder radio transmissions from 9/11. New York City firefighters who lost friends and colleagues in the towers will be on hand to provide additional information and historical context.
In 2013, the Stephen Siller Tunnel to Towers Foundation created the mobile exhibit as a tribute to all those whose lives were sacrificed on September 11, 2001. The 9/11 NEVER FORGET mobile exhibit, which has traveled around the U.S., serves as a tool to educate America’s youth about the historic and heroic events of that day.
The Siller family started the Stephen Siller Tunnel to Towers Foundation to honor the memory of their brother, Stephen, a New York City firefighter who lost his life on September 11, 2001, after strapping on his gear and running through the Brooklyn Battery Tunnel to the Twin Towers.
The mobile exhibit will arrive in Chapel Hill on Monday, Sept. 21, at approximately 6 p.m. and will be escorted to the University by an honor guard composed of North Carolina State Troopers, sheriff’s deputies and representatives from the Chapel Hill Police and Fire Departments.
