Media invited to join UNC-Chapel Hill at launch of new campus Makerspace network

Spaces will enhance Carolina’s ability to design, prototype and create new products

(Chapel Hill, N.C.— Nov. 14, 2016) – Media are invited to join University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill leaders, students and faculty at 8 a.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 16 to celebrate the opening of a new state-of-the-art Be A Maker (BeAM) innovation space in the College of Arts and Science’s Murray Hall.

The new facility joins Makerspaces in the Hanes Art Center and Kenan Science Library (a partnership between BeAM and University Libraries’ Research Hub) to become the central hub of a BeAM Makerspace network.

The event will include student-led tours of the space and demonstrations of laser cutting, shop bot, 3D printing equipment and other technologies, along with a light breakfast.

Judith Cone, vice chancellor for innovation, entrepreneurship and economic development, Rich Superfine, faculty lead for the BeAM network and Rich Goldberg, director of undergraduate students for the department of Biomedical Engineering, will be available to discuss the space’s offerings and its impact on Carolina’s research, teaching and innovation goals.

Combining the latest in manufacturing equipment and electronics with education, BeAM’s mission is to empower Carolina’s community to imagine, design and create inventions that solve, fascinate and inspire.

With 3,500 square feet of fully equipped rooms for woodworking, metalworking, digital fabrication and more, the Murray Hall space will host training workshops and is already being used by faculty teaching subjects from biomedical engineering to sociology.
