“Voices from Tobe” to recall groundbreaking children’s book Oct. 21

 

Viewing of the exhibition Where is Tobe? Unfolding Stories of Childhood, Race, and Rural Life in North Carolina begins at 5 p.m.

 

(Chapel Hill, N.C. – Oct. 13, 2014) – The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill Library will mark the 75th anniversary of the book Tobe with a panel discussion titled “Voices from Tobe,” whichwill bring together individuals who appeared in the book, their descendants and neighbors, and members of the two North Carolina communities involved in its creation.

 

UNC Press published Tobe in 1939 breaking ground as one of the first realistic portrayals of African American individuals and communities in children’s literature. Benjamin Filene, director of public history at UNC Greensboro, will moderate the free public program Oct. 21 at 5:30 p.m. in UNC’s Wilson Special Collections Library.

 

Attendees can view the new exhibition, Where is Tobe? Unfolding Stories of Childhood, Race, and Rural Life in North Carolina,in Wilson Library’s North Carolina Collection Gallery beginning at 5 p.m. The program will begin at 5:30 p.m.
