(Chapel Hill, N.C.—Oct. 9, 2014) – Media representatives are invited to cover University Day observances at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill on Sunday, Oct. 12, Carolina’s 221st birthday.
University Day marks the laying of the cornerstone of Old East, the nation’s first state university building, in 1793 and the beginning of public higher education in the United States.
Keynote speaker: North Carolina Gov. Pat McCrory, who took office in January 2013 following a record 14 years as mayor of Charlotte.
Awards: Five university alumni will receive Distinguished Alumna and Alumnus Awards: Army Surgeon General Patricia Dallas Horoho, former N.C. Gov. James B. Hunt Jr., national geographer Andrew “Sandy” McNally IV, public policy lawyer James R. Patton Jr. and trial lawyer Wade M. Smith.
Krista Perreira, professor of public policy and associate dean for undergraduate research in the College of Arts and Sciences, will receive the Edward Kidder Graham Faculty Service Award.

Processional: At 1:30 p.m., faculty members, wearing their colorful academic regalia, and University staff members will line up at the Old Well for the processional.
Tar Heel Service Day: In celebration of University Day, Tar Heels around the world will unite for a global day of service. Last year, nearly 1,400 Carolina alumni and friends served a grand total of 8,161 hours in honor of University Day. For more information, see http://alumni.unc.edu/article.aspx?sid=2090
