Carolina Performing Arts will present Handel’s “Theodora” on Jan. 30 at 7:30 p.m. at Memorial Hall.

The opera will feature “The English Concert,” one of the first orchestras dedicated to performing with period instruments. It will be conducted by Harry Bicket and feature a cast of soloists and the Trinity Wall Street Choir of New York.

“We are thrilled to welcome some of the most exciting early music performers and finest soloists in the world to Memorial Hall for their Chapel Hill debut,” said Emil Kang, executive director for the arts at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. “’Theodora’ offers rich musical material and beautifully written characters; we are honored to share it with the community, both in the Hall and through the many events surrounding the performance.”

“Theodora” is the story of a Christian heroine sentenced to death by a Roman governor for refusing to sacrifice to Roman goddesses. Theodora escapes imprisonment by trading places with Didymus, a Roman soldier in love with Theodora. In the end, both are condemned to death.

Several campus and community events featuring the performers are scheduled before the concert. They include a master class with students and “Program Notes LIVE: A Conversation with Harry Bicket, Conductor” at Gerrard Hall on Thursday, Jan. 30, from 6:30 p.m. to 7:15 p.m.
