The fishing boats and people of eastern North Carolina will be the topic of a free public program Feb. 6 in Wilson Library at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Author and photographer Lawrence Earley will share photographs and vignettes from his book “The Workboats of Core Sound: Stories and Photographs of a Changing World.”

The program will begin at 5:30 p.m. following a reception at 5 p.m. For event information, contact Liza Terll, Friends of the Library, at liza_terll@unc.edu or (919) 548-1203.

Using nearly 100 black-and-white photographs mixed with essays and interviews, Earley focuses on the rich history behind the region’s hand-built wooden fishing boats. He calls each workboat “a memory bank of relationships and experiences.” Publishers Weekly praised the book for its “excellent job of highlighting Down East fishing culture.”

Earley is a writer and photographer who lives in Raleigh. He holds a Ph.D. in American literature from UNC and is the author of “Looking for Longleaf: The Fall and Rise of an American Forest.”
