An expert on Thomas Jefferson’s garden will speak Oct. 20 at the North Carolina Botanical Garden at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

“Thomas Jefferson, Gardener” is the topic of the garden’s annual Jenny Fitch Lecture at 2:30 p.m., to be delivered by Peter J. Hatch, the recently retired director of gardens and grounds for the Thomas Jefferson Foundation in Monticello, Va. Online registration for the free lecture is strongly encouraged.

Hatch will talk about the restoration of the gardens and landscape at historic Monticello over the last 50 years, and how the fruits, flowers, and vegetables that Jefferson cultivated have evolved in the last two centuries. After the lecture and reception, he will sign copies of his book, “A Rich Spot of Earth: Thomas Jefferson’s Revolutionary Garden at Monticello.”
