NC high court to hear case on pre-K program

North Carolina's Supreme Court is considering a case that could decide whether a pre-kindergarten academic program designed to boost the educational prospects of poor children must be expanded to enroll every needy 4-year-old, a move one estimate put at up to $300 million a year. …The change from More at Four to the NC Pre-K Program barely changed its quality or effectiveness, but shrank the access during the 2011-12 school year, according to a report this year by the Frank Porter Graham Child Development Institute at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

Georgia realtor charged for gifts to UNC football player

The employee of a Georgia real estate agency is the third person to be indicted in a North Carolina investigation of sports agents. Patrick Mitchell Jones of Cartersville, Ga., is charged with one count of athlete-agent inducement.

UNC leaders hope charges will deter rogue sports agent

UNC system President Tom Ross said Friday that the decision by Orange County authorities to charge a sports agent accused of providing student athletes with improper benefits will hopefully deter the practice. Ross made his statement Friday to reporters following a meeting of the UNC Board of Governors.

Praise for NCCU in wake of shooting incident

Central University campus police officers involved in the fatal shooting last month of an armed man near the edge of campus were applauded Friday for their quick response to the potentially deadly threat. UNC system President Tom Ross highlighted the officers, NCCU Chancellor Debra Saunders-White and Campus Police Chief Timothy Bellamy during his monthly report to the UNC Board of Governors.
