The day before a new chancellor is installed at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Carolina faculty will participate in three academic panel discussions about UNC research and its impact. The panel discussions are part of a series of events leading up to the installation of Carol L. Folt as the University’s 11th chancellor on University Day, Oct. 12.
“Chancellor Folt had the great idea to host panels as a way to spotlight the excitement and importance of research activities underway on our campus,” says Joe Templeton, the Francis Preston Venable Professor of Chemistry and former chair of the faculty. “The panelists were selected for their knowledge and their impact after gathering input from the deans.”
The panel discussions, which are free and open to the public, will begin at 3 p.m. Oct. 11 at the Carolina Inn. Registration is not required. The topics will be innovation, the future of the U.S. public research university and water – the focus of Carolina’s two-year academic theme.
Water in Our World, 3 p.m. to 3:35 p.m., Hill Ballroom, moderated by Terry Rhodes, music professor. Panelists include:
- Jamie Bartram, director of the Water Institute at UNC;
- Carol Seagle Hee, executive director of the Center for Sustainable Enterprise; and
- Donald Thomas Hornstein, Aubrey L. Brooks Professor of Law.
Innovation and Impact, 3:40 p.m. to 4:15 p.m., Chancellor’s Ballroom, moderated by Kristen M. Swanson, dean of School of Nursing. Panelists include:
- Cheryl Woods Giscombe, assistant professor in the School of Nursing;
- Zeynep Tufekci, assistant professor in School of Information and Library Science; and
- Will Vizuete, associate professor in the Gillings School of Global Public Health.
The Public Research University, 4:20 p.m. to 5 p.m., Hill Ballroom, moderated by John McGowan, director of the Institute for Arts and Humanities. Panelists include:
- Maryann P. Feldman, Heninger Distinguished Professor in the public policy department;
- James H. Johnson Jr., director of the Urban Investment Strategies Center; and
- Kim Strom-Gottfried, Smith P. Theimann Distinguished Professor for Ethics and Professional Practice in UNC’s School of Social Work.
Other public installation week events include:
