CNN’s Brooke Baldwin to speak at UNC Sept. 27

CNN anchor Brooke Baldwin will headline a Women in Media Leadership Series talk at 5:30 p.m. Sept. 27 at the School of Journalism and Mass Communication at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. The journalism school will hold a UNC Family Weekend reception with Baldwin at 4:30 p.m. in Carroll Hall before her talk.

UNC Environment, Health and Safety wins 2 major national awards

The environment, health and safety (EHS) department at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill recently received two major national awards for safety and innovation.

The Campus Safety Health and Environmental Management Association presented the 2013 Complete Safety Program Award of Honor to Director Mary Beth Koza, who accepted on behalf of the department.  It is the highest award a member institution can receive from the association and is given only when one of its members meets the highest standards. The award recognizes the University for excellence in designing and implementing safety programs including biological safety, laboratory safety, fire and life safety, chemical safety, environmental management, radiological safety, waste management, emergency preparedness, government relations, communications and administrative leadership.

The other national honor was the annual Innovation Award from the National Association of College and University Business Officers. Aaron Schmidt, chemical safety specialist, accepted the award on behalf of the University. The award recognized UNC’s Safe View 360, the process of photographing the interiors of laboratories from floor to ceiling with a camera and software. This process provides a 360-degree view of lab interiors so that fire and other emergency responders can view the interior of a room before they enter. The imagery is available onsite on a laptop or tablet, or in the EHS Emergency Operations Center, to aid in emergency management and planning.
