Mandated Program Leads To Drop In Domestic Violence

Mothers who completed a mandated domestic violence program were more likely to end abusive relationships. That’s according to new research out from the School of Social Work at UNC-Chapel Hill. The study looked at mothers who were mandated by courts or child services to take a 13-week program and learn methods on, parenting, self-advocacy and safety. …"And that may be a bit of a motivator to say ‘Okay this domestic violence situation isn’t just impacting me, it’s impacting my children, and I may need to do something different’,” said Rebecca Macy, who led the study.

UNC School of Nursing division chair named national nurse fellow

Cheryl B. Jones, associate professor and chair of the Division of Health Care Environments at UNC-Chapel Hill’s School of Nursing, has been named one of just 20 Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Executive Nurse Fellows this year. Jones will participate in the three-year leadership development program designed to enhance nurse leaders’ effectiveness in improving the U.S., health care system, according to a RWJ Foundation release.

Experts say Watauga elections board broke no law

Experts in government law say the chairman of the Watauga County Board of Elections broke no state law when he asked that a heated discussion during a board meeting be dropped from the minutes. The Winston-Salem Journal reports that UNC School of Government Professor Frayda Bluestein said the board can limit the detail in the official minutes as it sees fit.

Kinnaird, Ginsburg get it exactly wrong on resignations (Opinion-Editorial Column)

Two senior women in public life recently made news with decisions about retirement. One, state Sen. Ellie Kinnaird, announced she is retiring midway through her term because she can’t be effective in a legislature dominated by conservatives. The other, Supreme Court Associate Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, announced that she is not retiring; she will continue leading the bloc of four justices who regularly dissent from the work of the court’s five conservatives. (Eric L. Muller is the Dan K. Moore Distinguished Professor at the University of North Carolina School of Law.)

P.J. Hairston tells Daily Tar Heel he will play (Blog)

North Carolina athletic director Bubba Cunningham said recently that P.J. Hairston would play this season, but not in every game. And now we have the same from Hairston, the UNC junior guard who told the told the Daily Tar Heel, the UNC campus newspaper, that he will “be on the court” this season.

NC law allows university students facing discipline to hire an attorney

Public university students facing disciplinary charges may now hire an attorney to help them throughout the process, according to a new state law. The legislation, signed into law last week by Gov. Pat McCrory, could change the tenor of student conduct hearings at UNC system campuses across North Carolina. In the past, students could have an attorney advise them informally, but for the most part lawyers were barred from presenting evidence, cross examining witnesses or other direct representation during campus proceedings.

UNC Strategic Plan Hurt By Budget Cuts

The University of North Carolina’s five-year Strategic Plan took a big hit with the approval of this year’s budget by the N.C. Legislature. However, System President Tom Ross says the way in which the cuts were handed out will allow the individual campuses to protect its most vulnerable areas.

LinkedIn launches university pages this month

LinkedIn, the professional networking website that helps you connect with old bosses, business acquaintances or new job opportunities, recently launched another subsection of its offerings – University Pages. According to Christina Allen, the LinkedIn director of product management, the personalized pages just for colleges and universities will allow students to explore higher ed options around the world and start their university social network before they even step foot on campus. Students also can find alumni and campus news on the new tool. Duke University and UNC-Chapel Hill both have their pages already up and running.
