Margaret Williams, a student at the School of Medicine at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, is one of 19 students selected to receive a 2013 Hematology Opportunities for the Next Generation of Research Scientists (HONORS) award.

The American Society of Hematology (ASH) presents the annual awards to medical school students and residents who have demonstrated interest in conducting blood-disease research but who have not yet entered a hematology-related training program.

The goal is to encourage them to pursue hematology as a career path, according to ASH. Williams and her fellow awardees will receive a $5,000 stipend to conduct research with mentors at their respective institutions.
