The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill has provided approximately $657,500 in scholarships, fellowships and program support to 147 undergraduates for study abroad during 2013 and 2014. The awards, funded by private gifts to the College of Arts and Sciences, enable students to study in other countries for a semester, summer or year.

The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill has provided approximately $657,500 in scholarships, fellowships and program support to 147 undergraduates for study abroad during 2013 and 2014. The awards, funded by private gifts to the College of Arts and Sciences, enable students to study in other countries for a semester, summer or year.

More than one-third of UNC undergraduates study in other countries before they graduate – one of the highest study abroad rates among public universities nationwide. The Study Abroad Office in the College offers more than 320 programs in more than 70 countries.

“We are grateful for the private support that makes these opportunities available to Carolina undergraduates,” said Bob Miles, associate dean for study abroad. “Their support provides life-changing experiences for students, helping them become more globally aware.”

Below are descriptions of study abroad scholarships available through the College and this year’s recipients, listed alphabetically by North Carolina county and other states and countries. Also listed are their study abroad plans and names of the scholarships they received. Students without majors listed have not yet declared majors.

Bejarano-Benning Study Abroad Scholarship for Latin America
Alumna Leslie Benning of New York City and her husband, Rafael Bejarano, established this scholarship in 2003, and The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation matched their gift. The fund supports study abroad in Latin America.

Bejarano-Benning Study Abroad Scholarship for Spain/Iberian Peninsula
Alumna Leslie Benning of New York City and her husband, Rafael Bejarano, established this scholarship in 2003 to support semester or yearlong study abroad programs in Spain or Portugal.

Michael L. and Matthew L. Boyatt Award
Alumnus Michael Boyatt of Durham established this award in 1996 with his son, alumnus Matthew, of Durham. This merit award funds study abroad by undergraduates majoring in global studies or history.

John Brantley Honors Fund
Established in 2003 by alumnus John Lucier Brantley of Florida, the John Lucier Brantley Honors Fund supports undergraduate students participating in Honors Study Abroad, field research or other Honors-administered off-campus academic programs. Preference is given to in-state students for whose families’ participation would present an economic hardship.

Lucius E. Burch Fellows Program
The Burch Fellowships provide exceptional students with funds to support self-designed, off-campus learning experiences anywhere in the world.  Burch Fellows have the opportunity to engage in research, travel, or other activities that will enhance their college experience. 

Carolina Southeast Asia Summer Program
Funded by a generous gift in 2005 from the Twelve Labours Foundation, the program provides scholarships for 25 rising sophomores to participate in an eight-week academic program in Singapore and Thailand, designed as an introduction to Southeast Asia.

Davis-Barden Honors Study Abroad Scholarship
The scholarship covers participation in the London Honors semester abroad program. Recipients are selected for scholastic merit, intellectual engagement and financial need.

 

The Will Froelich Honors Fellowships

These fellowships are awarded to prospective Honors Carolina students who share Will Froelich’s adventuresome spirit, his lively intellect, his interest in civic engagement and his compassionate humanity.  The fellowships are utilized by students who wish to study abroad, participate in a program or internship related to public policy, pursue civic engagement or work with a faculty mentor on independent Honors research.

Fry Study Abroad Scholarship
This need-based scholarship is intended for students wishing to study abroad in Africa, the Middle East and Latin America.

Gravely Family Study Abroad Scholarship
This scholarship was established in 2006 by Lee Stevens Gravely of Rocky Mount and her four children, all of whom are UNC alumni:  Frances Gravely and Susan Gravely of Chapel Hill, Steve Gravely of Pittsboro and Page Gravely of Middleburg, Va. The award honors Lee Gravely’s late husband, alumnus Lloyd Lee Gravely, a World War II veteran and president of a family-owned export-import company, China American Tobacco Co. The fund provides annual study abroad scholarships, with a preference for North Carolinians.

Anthony and Hope Harrington Study Abroad Scholarship
Alumnus and former U.S. ambassador to Brazil Anthony Harrington of Easton, Md., created this award in 2004 with his wife, Hope. The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation matched their gift. The Harringtons established the scholarship to honor former Chilean President Ricardo Lagos, who taught at UNC in 1974 and 1975 and who received an honorary degree from UNC in 2001. The fund provides scholarships for study abroad in Latin America.

Harris Teeter Study Abroad Scholarship Program
This scholarship was established in 2004 by gifts from Harris Teeter and the Dickson Foundation, Inc. Harris Teeter, the Charlotte-based supermarket chain, is a wholly owned subsidiary of the Ruddick Corp., whose former chairman was the late Alan Dickson of Charlotte, a Dickson Foundation trustee. The fund provides scholarships for students from North Carolina, with a preference for Harris Teeter associates and their children.

Leonard G. and Rozelia S. Herring Study Abroad Award Fund
Alumnus Leonard Herring of North Wilkesboro and his wife, Rozelia, established this scholarship in 2005 for students with financial need and academic merit to participate in semester or year-long study abroad programs.

Hong Kong Alumni Club Scholarship Fund
Established in 2012, the Hong Kong Alumni Club Scholarship Fund provides full funding for a five-week program at the Chinese University of Hong Kong. This scholarship is annually awarded to two students who have not previously traveled to Asia and who are currently in the Carolina Covenant Scholars program, which provides eligible high-performing, low-income students the opportunity to graduate debt-free.

This fund supports scholarships for students participating in Honors Study Abroad programs.

Jacques Family Honors Study Abroad Scholarship
This scholarship was established in 2001 by John and Jane Jacques of Nashville, Tenn., whose daughter Lindsay, a UNC alumna, participated in the Honors Summer in London and Oxford program. The fund provides scholarships for students participating in Honors Study Abroad programs.

Charles Garland Johnson Sr. Scholarships
Carolina alumnae Mary Anne Johnson Dickson and Neal Johnson of Charlotte established the fund supporting these awards in 2004 to honor their late father, a banker and community leader in Elkin. The fund offers need- and merit-based scholarships to North Carolina undergraduates, with a preference for students from Surry, Wilkes and Yadkin counties.

Sarah Quinn Laney Memorial Fund
This fund supports scholarships for students participating in Honors-administered study abroad programs. Scholarship recipients must be residents of North Carolina. Preference is given to students who plan to study in France.  If no students meet that qualification, the scholarship is awarded to female students studying in Europe.

Grey Lineweaver Study Abroad Scholarship
Alumna Grey Lineweaver of Greensboro established this scholarship in 2005, and The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation matched her gift. The fund provides scholarships for study abroad in Latin America.

Peter G. C. Mallinson Fund for Innovation in International Education
Established in 2000, this fund provides scholarships for undergraduate students participating in Honors Study Abroad, field research, or other Honors-administered off-campus academic programs.

Phillips Ambassadors
The Phillips Ambassadors program was established in 2006 with a generous gift from alumnus Earl N. “Phil” Phillips Jr. of Chapel Hill, a business executive and former U.S. Ambassador to the Eastern Caribbean, and his family. This scholarship given annually to 25 to 50 students combines a financial award for a study abroad program in Asia with an academic course that puts the experience in a greater global context.

Richards S. Reynolds Honors Study Abroad Scholarship
This fund provides merit study abroad scholarships for two to three Honors Carolina students each year.  The scholarships provide a means of further stimulating the intellectual experience of Honors Carolina students through international travel.

Frances and E.T. Rollins Jr. Study Abroad Scholarship
Frances Rollins of Durham established this fund in 2008 in honor of her late husband, a UNC graduate and a former owner, board chairman and publisher of The Herald-Sun in Durham. The fund provides scholarships for students with financial need and academic merit.

Study Abroad Awards
The Study Abroad Office awards scholarships to some students from an awards fund supported by donor gifts. The awards are based primarily, but not exclusively, on financial need.

William D. Weir Fund for Honors Fellowships in Asian Studies
This fund provides fellowships for students to develop language skills and gain practical, independent work experience in China. Recipients spend the spring semester in Beijing for intensive language study and course work on contemporary China, and then spend the summer in internships in Beijing or Shanghai.


NORTH CAROLINA RECIPIENTS:

Alamance

Becca Conary, a rising junior from Gibsonville, will study this fall at Rijksuniversiteit Groningen in the Netherlands. A communication studies major, Conary received a Charles Garland Johnson Sr. Scholarship.

Elisa Crutchfield, a rising junior from Graham, will study this fall in the Honors Semester in London program in England. A global studies and Romance languages double major, Cructhfield received a Davis-Barden Honors Study Abroad Scholarship.

Ethan Robertson, a rising senior from Burlington, received an award from the William D. Weir Fund for Honors Fellowships in Asian Studies for study in Beijing, China, this spring and summer. Robertson is a journalism and mass communication major.

Ashe

Linden Wait, a rising senior from West Jefferson, studied this spring through the CIEE (Council on International Education and Exchange) Arabic Language program in Amman, Jordan. A global studies and political science double major, Wait received a Michael L. and Matthew L. Boyatt Award.

Buncombe

Christopher Krolak, a rising junior from Asheville, studied this spring at Universidad San Francisco de Quito in Ecuador. A global studies and political science double major, Krolak received a Grey Lineweaver Study Abroad Scholarship.

Kevin Mensah-Biney, a rising senior from Asheville, is studying this summer in England in the Burch Field Research Science Seminar in London. A nutrition major, Mensah-Biney received a Jacques Family Honors Study Abroad Scholarship.

Lydia Potts, a rising senior from Asheville, is studying this summer in the Burch Field Research Seminar on Human Rights and International Law in Rwanda and The Hague. A global studies and political science double major, Potts received an award from the Peter G. C. Mallinson Fund for Innovation in International Education.

Otis Skipper, a rising sophomore from Asheville, was selected for the Carolina Southeast Asia Summer Program in Singapore, Malaysia and Thailand. Skipper is a mathematics major.

Caldwell

Patrick Livingston, a rising junior from Granite Falls, is studying this summer in the Honors London and Oxford program in England. A peace, war and defense major, Livingston received an award from the Peter G. C. Mallinson Fund for Innovation in International Education.

Catawba

Ratchany Vang, a rising sophomore from Hickory, studied this spring at Mahidol University International College in Salaya, Thailand. A communication studies major, Vang received a Charles Garland Johnson Sr. Scholarship.

Chatham

Larisa Bennett, a rising sophomore from Pittsboro, is studying this summer on the UNC Art and Music in London program in England. A communication studies major, Bennett received a Frances and E. T. Rollins Jr. Study Abroad Scholarship.

Cherokee

David Kelly, a rising senior from Brasstown, studied this spring at the University of Manchester in England. A physics and astronomy major, Kelly received an award from the Leonard G. and Rozelia S. Herring Study Abroad Fund.

Clay

Shimeng Xiao, a rising senior from Hayesville, is studying this summer at the Chinese University of Hong Kong. An economics major, Xiao received a Charles Garland Johnson Sr. Scholarship.

Cumberland

Samantha Bender, a rising junior from Fayetteville, is studying this summer at John Cabot University’s Institute in International Communication in Rome, Italy. A communication studies and psychology double major, Bender received a Charles Garland Johnson Sr. Scholarship.

Susan Gleaves, a rising sophomore from Fayetteville, was selected for the Carolina Southeast Asia Summer Program in Singapore, Malaysia and Thailand. Gleaves is a nutrition major.

Lindsey Rietkerk, a rising senior from Fayetteville, is studying this summer in the Burch Field Research Seminar on Human Rights and International Law in Rwanda and The Hague. A political science and peace, war and defense double major, Rietkerk received an award from the Honors International Experience Fund.

Dare

Meredith Fish, a rising junior from Kitty Hawk, is studying this summer in the Burch Field Research Seminar on Sustainability and Environmental Planning in Germany, Denmark and Sweden. A double major in mathematics and environmental sciences, Fish received an award from the Honors International Experience Fund.

Jashawnna Gladney, a rising sophomore from Thomasville, is studying this summer at the Chinese University of Hong Kong. A psychology major, Gladney received a Hong Kong Alumni Club Scholarship.

Macon

Alexandra Armor, a rising senior from Highlands, studied this spring at the Lorenzo de Medici Institute in Florence, Italy. A psychology major, Armor received a Harris Teeter Study Abroad Scholarship.

Madison Swofford, a 2013 graduate from Franklin, studied this spring at Boğaziçi University in Istanbul, Turkey. A double major in public policy and English, Swofford received a Gravely Family Study Abroad Scholarship.

Mecklenburg

Mark Baumgarten, a rising sophomore from Charlotte, was selected for the Carolina Southeast Asia Summer Program in Singapore, Malaysia and Thailand. Baumgarten is a philosophy major.

Christopher Bradfield, a rising senior from Davidson, studied this spring at the University of Glasgow in Scotland. A physics and astronomy major, Bradfield received a Harris Teeter Study Abroad Scholarship.

Neelesh Dewan, a rising senior from Mint Hill, is studying in the UNC Summer in India program in New Delhi. A biology major, Dewan was chosen as a Phillips Ambassador.

Ulugbek Ergashev, a rising senior from Matthews, studied this spring at the Chinese University of Hong Kong through Kenan-Flagler Business School. A business administration major, Ergashev was chosen as a Philips Ambassador.

Bliss Green-Morehead, a rising junior from Charlotte, received an award from the William D. Weir Fund for Honors Fellowships in Asian Studies for study in Beijing, China, this spring and summer. Green-Morehead is an Asian studies and Germanic and Slavic languages and literatures double major.

Hannah Heidenreich, a rising senior from Charlotte, will study and have an internship this fall in South Africa through the Honors Semester in Cape Town program. A communication studies major, Heidenreich received a Jacques Family Honors Study Abroad Scholarship.

Adrienne Laniak, a rising sophomore from Matthews, was selected for the Carolina Southeast Asia Summer Program in Singapore, Malaysia and Thailand. Laniak is an English major.

A geography and global studies double major, Simonsen received an award from the Leonard G. and Rozelia S. Herring Study Abroad Fund.

Andrew Stowe, a rising sophomore from Wilmington, is studying this summer at the Chinese University of Hong Kong. A business administration and mathematics double major, Stowe received a Harris Teeter Study Abroad Scholarship.

Jessica Trexler, a rising junior from Carolina Beach, studied this spring at the Lorenzo de Medici Institute in Florence, Italy. A biology major, Trexler received a Harris Teeter Study Abroad Scholarship.

Onslow

Sutton Alford, a rising junior from Jacksonville, is studying this summer at the London School of Economics.  A business administration major, Alford is a Froelich Fellow.

Orange

Emma Badia, a rising senior from Chapel Hill, is studying this summer in Shanghai, China, through CIEE (Council on International Education and Exchange). An art major, Badia was chosen as a Phillips Ambassador.

Stephanie O’Daly, a rising senior from Carrboro, studied this spring in the UNC Research in the Galapagos program in Ecuador. An environmental sciences major, O’Daly received a Charles Garland Johnson Sr. Scholarship.

Rose Peifer, a rising junior from Chapel Hill, will study for the 2013-2014 academic year at Pontificia Universidad Católica del Perú in Lima. A women’s and gender studies and global studies double major, Peifer received a Michael L. and Matthew L. Boyatt Award.

Amelia Riely, a rising sophomore from Chapel Hill, was selected for the Carolina Southeast Asia Summer Program in Singapore, Malaysia and Thailand. Riely is an economics and global studies double major.

Mack Shih, a rising senior from Chapel Hill, is studying this summer in England in the Burch Field Research Science Seminar in London. A chemistry major, Shih received a Davis-Barden Honors Study Abroad Scholarship.

Kou Xu, a rising senior from Chapel Hill, is studying this summer in Kunming, China through SIT (School for International Training) Study Abroad’s Community Health and Traditional Chinese Medicine program. A biology and Asian studies double major, Xu was chosen as a Phillips Ambassador.

Li Zhang, a rising sophomore from Chapel Hill, was selected for the Carolina Southeast Asia Summer Program in Singapore, Malaysia and Thailand. Zhang is an English major.

Pitt
