Thanks to the generosity of hundreds of donors and 160 volunteers, the 25th annual Carolina Blood Drive on Tuesday (June 4) collected 804 units of life-saving blood at the Dean E. Smith Center.

“The blood can be turned into more than 2,400 products that will help sustain the lives of the sick and injured,” said Caroline Allison, donor recruitment representative for the Carolinas Region of the American Red Cross. “It may be a baby born with heart complications, a teenager in an automobile accident, a father undergoing chemotherapy treatment or a grandmother having hip replacement surgery.”

Over the past 25 years, the Carolina Blood Drive has collected more than 22,590 units from 24,210 donors and served as a model for other universities.

“It's overwhelming to know that UNC-Chapel Hill has impacted on a large scale what other universities are doing in following in our footsteps and successfully holding large drives each year,” said Katrina Coble, chair of the blood drive committee. “It's very gratifying to know we have started something huge in the state of North Carolina and beyond that will have a lasting impact.”
