The Campus Y at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill received a $10,000 grant from the Carolina Parents Council for YFund, the Campus Y’s social justice seed fund. This year the Carolina Parents Council awarded a total of $101,515 to 14 UNC-Chapel Hill grant recipients.

The YFund is a student-appropriated funding source for student social justice initiatives administered by the Campus Y Development Committee (DevCo). YFund applicants are required to submit a formal proposal, forecast a budget and pitch their project before a board of experienced student reviewers.

Projects are evaluated and awarded micro-grants based on eight criteria: social justice impact, clarity, feasibility, fiscal responsibility, innovation, collaboration, sustainability and evaluation.

This year a $400 YFund microgrant allowed Campus Y student committee Helping Youth by Providing Enrichment (HYPE) to expand its yearlong afterschool tutoring and enrichment program at Chapel Hill family resource centers to five days a week; providing children in grades K-5 a fun, safe learning environment.

“We are thrilled that we can support a grant which is created by students for students, and it is our hope that this significant grant can help expand the YFund to the entire campus,” said Liz Zellner, Carolina Parents Council executive committee member and 2012 national co-chair.
