A new website created for Carolina Performing Arts will showcase the many aspects of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill’s centennial celebration of Igor Stravinsky’s “The Rite of Spring.”
The site, www.theriteofspringat100.org, highlights the performances, new commissions and world premieres that are part of UNC’s “‘The Rite of Spring’ at 100” celebration.
The site also features mobile-friendly construction, a strong social media interface, audio and video clips and in-depth information about artists involved in the centennial celebration, such as Yo-Yo Ma, Valery Gergiev, Bill T. Jones, Anne Bogart and Vijay Iyer.
“We wanted a website that could showcase the fascinating history of ‘The Rite of Spring’ and its continuing influence on today’s composers and artists,” said Mark Nelson, director of marketing for Carolina Performing Arts.
The ballet, a tribal myth of human sacrifice choreographed by Vaslav Nijinsky to Stravinsky’s score, set off a riot when it premiered in 1913 at the Théatre des Champs-Elysées in Paris. Stravinsky’s use of brutal and asymmetrical rhythms and Nijinsky’s “anti-ballet” paired with designer Nicholas Roerich’s costumes inspired by pagan tribes was shocking for its time and remains a hallmark of artistic innovation.
Carolina Performing Arts is honoring this masterpiece by commissioning artists to create 11 new works, including nine world premieres and two U.S. premieres that will debut during the 2012-2013 season.
