According to a new study underage drinkers can easily buy alcohol on line. Researchers at UNC Chapel Hill recruited eight people between 18 and 20 to try and buy wine and beer from on-line retailers.

Some insight into athletes’ graduation rates

Baseball players in the Atlantic Coast Conference graduated at a rate 32 percentage points lower than the general male student population, according to a study released Wednesday. That ranks the ACC 24th out of 30 conferences and fifth out of the 10 major conferences, according to the College Sport Research Institute at The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, which analyzes graduation rates of athletes and compares them to the general student body.

UNC professor, jailed in Argentina, has his defenders

A University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill professor has spent months in an Argentinian prison while colleagues in Chapel Hill advocate on his behalf. Paul Frampton, a physics and astronomy professor, was arrested at an airport in Buenos Aires at the end of January and charged with attempting to smuggle drugs out of the country, according to the U.S. State Department.

With regard to university tuition increases, the General Assembly faces a difficult choice in the coming weeks. It can reject or limit increases and save money for students and their families. The cost of college is rising far too fast and outpacing the ability of many working-class families to pay. Students are choking on record levels of debt, a burden to shed given the labor market they face upon graduation.

Friday remains in critical condition

University of North Carolina system President Emeritus Bill Friday remained in critical condition in UNC Hospital on Thursday. Friday, 91, was hospitalized with what longtime friend Robert Seymour, minister emeritus of the Binkley Memorial Baptist Church, said he was told was a heart-related condition.
