The College of Arts and Sciences has completed two reviews resulting from internal investigations launched last fall when questions were raised about irregularities involving some courses in the Department of African and Afro-American Studies.
The course review in the African and Afro-American studies department, which began last September, was conducted by Jonathan Hartlyn, senior associate dean for social sciences and global programs, and William Andrews, senior associate dean for fine arts and humanities. Chancellor Holden Thorp invoked his right to release the report to maintain the integrity of the university. To read the report, click here.
Also completed was a report by the College’s Independent Study Task Force led by Bobbi Owen, senior associate dean for undergraduate education. College units have received the report with instructions for all department chairs to begin implementing the recommendations in fall 2012. To read the report, click here.
College Dean Karen Gil sent an email to college faculty about both reports today (May 4). To read the message, click here.
“As a result of these reviews and follow-up actions, the policies of the department and the College have been strengthened to ensure consistent standards for academic excellence and integrity,” Gil wrote.
Board of Trustees Chair Wade Hargrove and Chancellor Holden Thorp also have issued statements about the report. To read the statements, click here.
