U. of North Carolina Physics Professor Fights Drug Charges in Argentina

Paul H. Frampton, a professor of physics and astronomy at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, is being held in an Argentine prison on charges of trying to smuggle two kilograms of cocaine, which were found in January in his checked luggage at the Buenos Aires airport, The News & Observer reported.

UNC-Chapel Hill's pharmacy, public health schools receive large gifts

UNC-Chapel Hill’s pharmacy school has received a $2.5 million gift to expand the school's research programs and enhance classroom offerings. The gift is from Fred Eshelman, an alumnus and member of the UNC Board of Governors. Also, Don and Jennifer Holzworth of Chapel Hill gave $666,000 to the university's School of Global Public Health to establish a distinguished professorship. The gift will be supplemented with matching funds through the state's Distinguished Professors Endowment Trust Fund to create a $1 million distinguished professorship.

Business Briefs: 3 N.C. schools among top business programs

…UNC Chapel Hill's Kenan-Flagler Business School was ranked 10th overall, down from eighth in 2011. It was seventh in the student survey portion of the ranking and 40th in the recruiter survey. The median starting salary was listed at $56,000.

Orange County finalizes new aging plan

…The county is finalizing a new Master Aging Plan, or MAP, the first one of its kind, designed to create public-private partnerships for services for older adults throughout Orange County. Orange County’s Department on Aging and a team of public health graduate students from UNC-Chapel Hill solicited feedback from hundreds of adults 65 and older in every township in the county and created five work groups to guide how the plan was created.

Herman Cain Will Speak At UNC For Congressional Candidate Fundraiser

Former Republican presidential hopeful Herman Cain is traveling to North Carolina to rally his party's faithful and raise money for a Triangle-area congressional candidate. Cain was the scheduled keynote speaker Thursday night at the Wake County Republican Party convention being held at the North Carolina State Fairgrounds. Earlier in the day, he was set to speak on the campus of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and appear at a lunch fundraiser for Bill Randall of Wake Forest, who is running in the 13th Congressional District primary.

As UNC officials continue to address the flaws in the housekeeping system, they’re about to announce a new hire for the vacant housekeeping director position. “By way of housekeeping update, the advisory group is continuing to meet on a regular basis,” says UNC Employee Forum Chair Jackie Overton. “We’ve completed the director search, and we expect an announcement soon. So, this process is ongoing in a positive direction.”
WRDU won't promote Rush Limbaugh during UNC broadcasts

The fallout from Rush Limbaugh’s comments about a Georgetown law student has impacted even the sports broadcasts for the University of North Carolina in the Triangle. UNC Chancellor Holden Thorp said in an interview with Carolina Connection, a campus media outlet, that many at Carolina were upset about Limbaugh’s comments.
