PlayMakers Repertory Company at the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill announces the fifth Summer Youth Conservatory, re-imagined for 2012.

The conservatory offers students the opportunity to work with professional directors, choreographers and musical directors at PlayMakers. Applications are due March 2; auditions are March 10-11.

The conservatory will feature three programs: Theatre Intensive and Theatre Tech for high school students, and a new program called Theatre Quest for middle-schoolers.

In Theatre Intensive, a cast of 25 actors will prepare for and perform the Tony Award-winning musical satire, “Urinetown: The Musical,” from July 19-22 at PlayMakers’ PaulGreen Theatre. Longtime company member Julie Fishell will direct, along with guest director Jeff Stanley.
Classes and rehearsals begin June 18. Tuition is $1,500 per actor, with scholarships available.

Theatre Tech is an in-depth program in scenic, costume and lighting design. Classes begin June 11, with apprenticeship appointments beginning June 20. Tuition is $750, with scholarships available.

Theatre Quest is a series of weeklong classes that will give middle-school students the opportunity to train with professional artists in a different subject each week: “The Fundamentals of Acting,” “Shakespeare,” “Stage Combat,” “Acting for the Camera” and “Improv and Physical Theatre: The Art of Creating a Character.” Enroll by contacting Jennifer Wales at (919) 962-2491, jwales@unc.edu. Tuition is $300 per week.
