Science education philanthropy is more fun than a trip to the circus with Cirque des Sciences, a new fundraising gala by Morehead Planetarium and Science Center at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

Tickets ($85 per person, $150 per couple) are on sale now for the inaugural gala on Feb. 10.

Morehead event coordinator Terry Gunnels described Cirque des Sciences as “five rings of amazing science demonstrations.” The event, which begins at 7:30 p.m., includes food and beverages from some of the area’s leading chefs, music, a digital auction and special performances by unique acts. WRAL-TV chief meteorologist Greg Fishel will serve as celebrity host for the event.

Cirque des Sciences helps support Morehead programs that enhance science education for more than 80,000 North Carolina schoolchildren every year.

“This is a one-of-a-kind opportunity to improve science education in North Carolina,” said Todd Boyette, Morehead director. “Where else can you watch a fire-eating performer and contribute to our state’s science literacy at the same time?”
