A New Zealand earthquake expert will give a talk at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill on Jan. 17 about the challenges of recovering from natural disasters.

Bruce Glavovic, Ph.D., will present “Rethinking Recovery: the Christchurch Earthquake,” a summary of his current research analyzing the first year of recovery efforts in earthquake-ravaged greater Christchurch. The city, New Zealand’s third largest urban area, was hit by a magnitude 6.3 earthquake last February that killed 181 people and caused severe damage. The area continues to be rocked by aftershocks.

Glavovic’s talk, presented by the UNC Hazards Center, will be from noon-1:30 p.m. in Vance Hall, Room 120.

It will focus on the governance challenges of recovery efforts and the making of critical post-disaster social choices under pressure cooker conditions.

Glavovic is a professor in natural hazards planning, resource and environmental planning at Massey University’s School of People, Planning and Environment in Palmerston North, New Zealand. He also is associate director of Massey University’s Joint Centre for Disaster Research.

The UNC Hazards Center partners with the Joint Centre for Disaster Research to collaborate on research, teaching, lesson sharing and scholarly exchange.
