Halloween won’t only be an evening phenomenon this year at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
In the daytime, folks can visit a new exhibit of 17 large paper maché masks created by local artist and Carolina alumnus Jane Filer. The exhibit is free to the public through April in the Frank Porter Graham Student Union off South Road. The union is open from 7:30 a.m. to 1 a.m. weekdays, 9 a.m. to 1 a.m. Saturdays and 11 a.m. to 1 a.m. Sundays.
The colorful artworks actually are hollow heads, which costumed friends don for gallery openings of exhibits of Filer’s paintings. No opening is scheduled for the show in the union, but go to http://www.janefiler.com/ to see photos.
Filer earned a master’s degree in fine arts from UNC in 1985. Eight galleries in North Carolina, Atlanta and Connecticut represent her, and she recently completed a 7-foot by 45-foot commissioned mural at Raleigh-Durham International Airport.
For more information about the UNC exhibit, call the union information desk at (919) 962-2285.
