The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill has hired Carr Sports Associates, Inc. to assist a search committee seeking the next director of athletics.

Chancellor Holden Thorp made the selection based on a review by the 13-member search committee he appointed last month. The committee, which met for the first time Aug. 26, heard presentations from two nationally respected search firms specializing in athletics administration that were identified by Thorp and the University.

“We are very pleased to join with Bill Carr and his associates to help the committee start fulfilling its assignment – to find the very best person with outstanding athletic administration credentials to become our next athletic director,” said Lowry Caudill, search committee chair, a member of the Educational Foundation Inc’s executive committee, a University trustee and an adjunct chemistry faculty member.

The new athletic director’s first major assignment will be to hire Carolina’s permanent head football coach.

The University finalized a contract with Carr Sports Associates, based in Gainesville, Fla., on Aug. 30. Under the terms, Carr Sports Associates will assist the committee with identifying and recruiting candidates for director of athletics. The University will use non-state funds to pay the search firm to assist the committee in recommending to the chancellor candidates to succeed Dick Baddour.

Carr Sports Associates will receive a $40,000 fee as compensation for its services.  The contract includes provisions for reimbursing Carr Sports Associates for its expenses associated with the search. Bill Carr will serve as the firm’s principal representative for the search. His firm places head coaches, athletics directors, conference commissioners and executives for affiliated organizations.

The search committee has meetings scheduled Sept. 7 and Sept. 14. Based on committee feedback, a job description for the position has been finalized and the University will post it to the Human Resources website for a 30-day period and start advertising in national publications.

The position description requests that applicants submit documents electronically to:  www.highereddecisions.com.  Nominations should be sent to: csauncch@gmail.com.
