Chancellor Holden Thorp has made a recommendation for UNC’s new vice chancellor for finance and administration. Karol Kain Gray is scheduled to assume the position. Before coming to Carolina, she was the vice president for finance and administration at Stony Brook University in New York.

Researchers: Budget cuts hurt economy

UNC offers study abroad scholarships to several local students

UNC Chapel Hill provided about $637,000 in scholarships and fellowships to students for study abroad during 2011 and 2012, with several of those students hailing from Durham and Orange counties. The awards, funded by private gifts to the College of Arts and Sciences, enable students to study in other countries for a semester, summer or year.

Hundreds of schools now use Common Application

When it became clear that college applications were headed online, a group of colleges got together to try to simplify the process. Thus, the Common Application (Common App – www.commonapp.org), which allows students to apply to participating schools was created. It launched in 1975 with 15 private colleges. Its popularity has mushroomed, and today it counts 463 public and private institutions as members. UNC Chapel Hill and UNC Wilmington are two of this year's newest recruits.
