University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill police have arrested Curtis Rene Mellott, 46, of Chapel Hill on a charge of felony larceny of a privately-owned aircraft.

University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill police have arrested Curtis Rene Mellott, 46, of Chapel Hill on a charge of felony larceny of a privately-owned aircraft.

Mellott was apprehended Thursday (Aug. 18) afternoon at his residence, 114 Mel Oak Drive. He was transported to UNC Public Safety and charged in the larceny of a Piper Saratoga aircraft stolen early Tuesday (Aug. 16) from UNC’s Horace Williams Airport. The plane later crashed in Alamance County. 

The Alamance County Sheriff’s Department is working with the UNC Department of Public Safety in the service of that agency’s warrant for possession of stolen property. Mellott is to be transported to the Orange County magistrate’s office in Hillsborough, where bond and a court date will be set.

UNC Police and the Alamance County Sheriff’s Department are continuing their investigations.
