…Last month scientists documented how a fishing operation had captured and killed more than 370 sharks in Galapagos National Park despite a dedicated enforcement effort there. University of North Carolina marine biologist John Bruno, who sampled the sharks along with colleagues from Universidad San Francisco de Quito and the Galapagos Science Center, described it as “a marine massacre.”

According to a new study by University of North Carolina researcher to be published in the August issue of the Journal of the American Dietetic Association, American children eat about 255 calories more per day when they eat outside the home.

A 2010 University of North Carolina study found that between two and five football players die from heat related complications every year. Although these deaths are more commonly seen in high school and college athletes, NFL players remain at risk.

UNC receives $277M in gifts

…The gifts, the second highest total on record, represent a 3.3 percent increase over the $268.1 million the school received the previous fiscal year. "We know there was controversy around the football program this past year, and we're very pleased with how our donors responded," said Scott Ragland, a spokesman for the school's Office of University Development. "They're enabling us to do great things, and we're very grateful."

Duke, with $350M, leads UNC and NCSU in donations

…Neighboring University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill received $277 million in gifts and an additional $29 million in pledges. Commitments in 2011 helped the university create 11 endowed professorships, and 77 undergraduate scholarships and graduate fellowships. UNC-CH had more than 77,000 donors for the year.

Grant for Marine Biotech Center approved

The N.C. Biotechnology Center has approved a four-year, $2.5 million grant to establish a Marine Biotechnology Center of Innovation to accelerate development of commercial products from the state's marine life using biotechnology. …Partners in the initial planning effort included representatives from UNC Wilmington and MARBIONC; UNC Chapel Hill's Institute for Marine Science; N.C. State University's Center for Marine Science and Technology; and the Duke Marine Lab.

Students get crash course in marine science

A group of students from Washington D.C. got a crash course in marine science Tuesday. The HERO program takes young males from some of the poorest areas of Washington D.C. and gives them opportunities they wouldn't otherwise have. At the University of North Carolina Institute of Marine Science the students did experiments and interacted with marine life.

After a break in and theft of confidential student records, UNC Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs Winston Crisp says UNC is doing everything in its power to address the situation. “Obviously, I think this is unfortunate and we’re going to do everything that we can to protect the students that have been involved and to move forward.”

Should you try the coconut milk in the dairy case?

Lawmaker questions need for tax-free weekend

The $19.7 billion state budget that lawmakers approved in June included deep spending cuts to many programs, yet it continued an annual event that costs North Carolina $12 million in revenue. The tax-free weekend, which runs from 12:01 a.m. Friday to 11:59 p.m. Sunday, encourages people to shop for school supplies and clothing, stimulating the economy. …Missy White, an incoming freshman at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, has been waiting for this weekend to spend big.

UNC Honor Court system to be reviewed in light of player's plagarized paper

Chancellor Holden Thorp has talked to some faculty members about forming a committee to review the student-run Honor Court system, which had its credibility damaged in a recent hearing with former University of North Carolina football player Michael McAdoo and the NCAA.
