However, prohibiting employers from considering applicants’ employment experience is not the answer. More Kids Eating Calorie-Packed Takeout Food

The obesity epidemic is being fueled still further by a growing trend among kids to eat out and bring takeout food home, University of North Carolina researchers say. …"We found that kids eat a relatively maintained level of calories at home, but in addition kids also eat an increasing number of calories outside the home," said study author Jennifer Poti, from the university's Gillings School of Global Public Health. "Eating outside the home is actually fueling the increased energy intake for kids."

Fast food — and other pre-prepared foods — linked to spike in kids' calories

…Researchers from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill assessed the food intake of nearly 30,000 children between 1977 and 2006 using four surveys. They found that children are consuming 179 more daily calories now than they were in the late 1970s — and that the increase is driven mostly by food eaten outside the house.

McDonald’s Plans to Make Happy Meals Nutritionally Happier (Blog)

McDonald’s has ignored calls to give Ronald McDonald the boot. But today it said it will take steps to improve the nutritional quality of its Happy Meals. …That increase was driven “by fast food eaten at home,” study co-author Jennifer Poti, a doctoral student in the department of nutrition at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, tells the Health Blog.

Caution: Your Child's First Job May Be Hazardous to Her Health

…Around 146,000 adolescents are injured in the workplace every year, according to federal data, with about 70 dying as a result. Even worse, a study in the current issue of the Journal of Adolescent Health argues that parents are unprepared to help their children stay safe. …Schulman collaborated with lead author Carol Runyan, Catherine Vladutiu, and Kimberly Rauscher for the study. (Carol Runyan is the director of the UNC Injury Prevention Research Center.)

It hinges on your knife and fork. Your dietary choices make a difference, and collectively, the fewer meat and dairy products all of us eat, the greater the benefits to our environment. I've discussed this in previous columns.
