U.S. Sen. Kay Hagan (D-N.C.) will join former congressional budget leaders and fiscal budget experts for a roundtable discussion on the nation’s debt crisis 10 a.m. July 25 at the Kenan Center on the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill campus.

“The Debt Crisis and Saving Our Fiscal Future” event, hosted by the Frank Hawkins Kenan Institute of Private Enterprise, is free and open to the public. A reception will follow. Details, a link to RSVP and parking information are at www.kenaninstitute.unc.edu/DebtCrisis.

Congress faces an Aug. 2 deadline to increase the nation’s debt ceiling and avoid a government default.

 “The contentious debate over whether Congress should once again raise the $14.3 trillion debt limit drives home the urgent need for our nation to develop a federal budget and fiscal policy that supports competitiveness and future prosperity,” said John D. Kasarda, Kenan Institute director. “We face dire consequences if we fail to make serious changes soon to our spending, taxation and debt policies.”

The July roundtable follows a March 2010 event focused on the issue hosted by the Kenan Institute and the bipartisan Concord Coalition, called “Fixing Our Fiscal Future,” which also featured a panel of national fiscal policy experts.

Participants in the upcoming roundtable will be:

  • U.S. Sen. Kay Hagan, (D-N.C), a member of the Senate Banking Committee and Senate Small Business and Entrepreneurship Committee;
  • John Spratt, former chairman, U.S. House of Representatives Budget Committee;
  • John Weinberg, director of research, Federal Reserve Bank of Richmond; and
  • Mark W. Yusko, chief executive officer and chief investment officer, Morgan Creek Capital Management LLC.

The moderator will be Gregory W. Brown, Sarah Graham Kenan Distinguished Scholar and Professor of Finance at UNC’s Kenan-Flagler Business School.
