Kristen Maye, a rising senior at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, has been chosen for a five-week history research program in New York City this summer.

A 2008 graduate of Independence High School in Mint Hill, Maye will be among 10 Gilder Lehrman History Scholars selected in a national competition. She is the daughter of Jeanette W. Maye of Charlotte and John W. Maye Jr., also of Charlotte.

The Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History, a nonprofit organization seeking to improve and enrich American history education, chooses top undergraduate American history majors for the program. The scholarship covers travel to and from New York and five weeks of living expenses.

Scholars develop primary source research projects using unpublished historical documents at the institute. Assigned topics include slavery, abolition and the Civil War. The scholars also take seminars led by distinguished historians and tour archives including the New York Public Library, the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the New York Historical Society.

Maye is double-majoring in history and African American studies with a minor in Hispanic studies.
