A national conference aimed at improving the quality of programs and services for young children with disabilities will take place at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill this month.

The 11th National Early Childhood Inclusion Institute is May 16-18 at the William and Ida Friday Center for Continuing Education. This year’s theme is “Innovations in Inclusion.” The concept of inclusion is the right of all children, regardless of ability, to participate in a broad range of activities.

More than 350 researchers, administrators, practitioners and families from around the country are expected to attend.

The conference features 60 sessions presented by experts from across the nation. Topics include dealing with challenging behaviors, updates on federal policies and initiatives, using social media in professional development and classroom practices to support inclusion.

The keynote speaker is Beth Harry, Ph.D., professor and chair of the department of teaching and learning at the University of Miami. Harry’s address is titled “Building Bridges with Families:  Culture, Race, Context and Language.”

Registration is $225. Attendees can earn continuing education credits. The conference is sponsored by the UNC FPG Child Development Institute.
