North Carolina Public Radio/WUNC-FM won seven awards at the North Carolina Associated Press Awards in Burlington on Saturday (April 9). The station took home half of the 14 awards handed out for Radio Division One, including outstanding news operation.
North Carolina Public Radio/WUNC-FM won seven awards at the North Carolina Associated Press Awards in Burlington on Saturday (April 9). The station took home half of the 14 awards handed out for Radio Division One, including outstanding news operation.
“It’s gratifying to see our staff recognized by their peers for their in-depth reporting,” said Brent Wolfe, news director for the station. “Their work is made possible by everyone who supports public radio.”
WUNC-FM won top honors in these categories:
- Series, for its nine-part series on the state’s future energy needs, “North Carolina Voices: Tomorrow’s Energy;
- Enterprise-documentary, for reporter Jessica Jones’ documentary on racial reconciliation in Cedar Grove;
- Consumer report, for health reporter Rose Hoban’s “Mental Health”;
- Best use of sound, for Hoban’s “Gourds Fly at Punkin Chunkin’”;
- Sports programming, for Dave DeWitt’s report on the NASCAR Pit Crew Challenge; and
- Features, for Leoneda Inge’s profile of rhythm and blues singer Chaka Khan.

WUNC-FM, a service of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, broadcasts at 91.5 FM in the Triangle and Triad, at 90.9 FM in Rocky Mount/Wilson and at 88.9 FM on the Outer Banks.
