High school students from Orange and Durham counties will learn the nuts and bolts of how energy and environmental policies are crafted at a workshop at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill on April 16 (Saturday).
The students are enrolled in UNC’s Climate Leadership and Energy Awareness Program, known as Climate LEAP, a science enrichment program run by the UNC Institute for the Environment.
Presenters at the half-day academy include U.S. Rep. David Price. Price and others will speak to students about how youth can make a difference in the actions of policymakers in regard to energy and climate change, as well as their ability to engage in the civic process.
The event is at the UNC School of Government. Staff with the North Carolina Civic Education Consortium will facilitate the day’s program. Price is scheduled to speak at 2:30 p.m. About 40 students have been selected to attend.
Climate LEAP is a science enrichment program launched in 2009 by the Institute for the Environment in collaboration with the Morehead Planetarium and Science Center with support from the Burroughs Wellcome Fund. The program engages 9th to 12th grade students in interdisciplinary science and mathematics activities and fosters the development of science communication and leadership skills.
