Sixty-seven of the brightest and most dedicated students at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill were honored Tuesday (April 12) with the University’s most prestigious awards for academic achievement and leadership in activities.
Sixty-seven of the brightest and most dedicated students at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill were honored Tuesday (April 12) with the University’s most prestigious awards for academic achievement and leadership in activities.
Chancellor Holden Thorp presided at the annual Chancellor’s Awards ceremony, in which Executive Associate Provost Ron Strauss presented academic awards and Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs Winston Crisp presented service and leadership awards.
Two students won two awards apiece. Senior Kimberly Brooke Garner of Charlotte won two awards in women’s studies. Senior Wen-How Edward Hsyeh of Lenexa, Kan., won the award for most outstanding senior in the Johnston Undergraduate Awards Program and an award for the senior man judged to be outstanding in several categories.
The awards, which vary from certificates to plaques to cash, were created by donors.
Student recipients, their parents and awards are listed below, with North Carolina winners first by hometown followed by out-of-state winners. Students listed in more than one place are noted with an asterisk.

Ariel Elyse Rudolph, daughter of Tom and Beth Rudolph of Alexander: the Alexander Julian Prize, to an undergraduate in studio art exhibiting an outstanding sense of design that the faculty interprets as a mature integration of formal issues and content.

Faye Farrah Fang, daughter of Zheng Fang and Hong Xue of Apex: the Undergraduate Prize in Art History, to the undergraduate who, in the opinion of a faculty committee, has done the most outstanding work in art history.

Morgan Leigh Taylor, daughter of Trent and Amy Taylor of Archdale: the Sport Clubs Council Achievement Award, to the student who has made the greatest contribution to the vitality and strength of club sports.
Asheville
Rhea Sarah Keller, daughter of Jerry and Carrie Keller of Asheville: the Panhellenic Council Award, to the undergraduate who has made the most significant contributions in leadership, scholarship and service to her chapter and the Greek and University communities.
Carrboro
Kelsey Carley Salvesen, daughter of David Salvesen and Kathleen Carley of Carrboro: the Jacques Hardré Undergraduate Award for Excellence in French, to an undergraduate whose work in French language and literature has been judged most outstanding by a faculty committee.
Charlotte
Kimberly Brooke Garner, daughter of Robert and Sandra Garner of Charlotte: the Chi Omega Award for Scholarship and Leadership, to the senior student in the women’s studies department chosen as most outstanding in scholastic achievement and exemplary leadership; and the Mary Turner Lane Award in Women’s Studies, to the senior judged to have made an outstanding contribution to research on women’s issues.
Matthew Scott Hoehn, son of Scott and Cynthia Hoehn of Charlotte: the Bernard Boyd Memorial Prize, to the senior majoring in religious studies who has been selected by a faculty committee as most outstanding in academic achievement.
Eric Prescott Jones, son of James and Barbara Jones of Charlotte: the I.R. Hagadorn Award, to the outstanding rising senior biology major with the highest grade-point average in biology who has demonstrated excellence and dedication in undergraduate research.
Trenton Tyler Kool, son of Marc Kool and Elaine Bailey of Charlotte: the Rob Park Memorial Award, to a senior who has made a significant contribution by improving educational and community service programming to assist undergraduate students in learning about the legal system, the rigors of a legal education and the changing nature of the legal profession.
*Stuart Hampton Neal II, son of Stuart Neal of Monroe and Paula Simpson of Charlotte: the Algernon Sydney Sullivan Award, to one man and one woman in the senior class who have best demonstrated unselfish interest in human welfare.
Jeffrey Scott Reichard, son of David and Patricia Reichard of Charlotte: the George H. Cocolas Pharmacy Student Body Award, to the member of the graduating class who has demonstrated the highest qualities of character, deportment, scholarship, professionalism and participation in co-curricular activities.
DaShon Lanell Williams, son of Lanell and Stacy Williams of Charlotte: the National Pan-Hellenic Council Award, to the undergraduate who has made the most significant contributions in leadership, scholarship and service to his or her individual chapter and the Greek and University communities.
