A seminar at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill next week will examine how the atomic energy disaster currently playing out in Japan compares to other well-known nuclear catastrophes.

David McNelis, Ph.D., research professor with the UNC Institute for the Environment and the environmental sciences and engineering department in the Gillings School of Global Public Health, will present the talk “Nuclear Power Plant Safety: Three Mile Island, Chernobyl and now Fukushima Daiichi,” on April 12.

The seminar will highlight differences between the three incidents, emphasizing the disparities between the accidents at Fukushima and Chernobyl. McNelis specializes in conventional, alternative and nuclear energy systems and technologies and the nuclear fuel cycle.

The seminar is at noon in Toy Lounge in Dey Hall. However, space is limited and RSVPs via email are required. RSVPs should be sent to tony_reevy@unc.edu. Lunch will be provided.

The event is the latest in a series of energy and environment luncheons organized by the Institute and made possible in part by a grant from the Progress Energy Foundation.
