Media representatives are invited to attend the first public forum held by President Barack Obama’s National Advisory Council on Innovation and Entrepreneurship (NACIE) at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. U.S. Secretary of Commerce, Gary Locke, recently nominated to be the new U.S. ambassador to China, will speak, as will Gov. Bev Perdue. UNC Chancellor Holden Thorp, a council member, will open the meeting and moderate a question-answer session. (Note: Free tickets are required to attend the event; all have been distributed.)

The 24-member council was created last year to support President Obama's innovation strategy by helping to develop policies that foster entrepreneurship and identifying new ways to take great ideas from the lab to the marketplace to drive economic growth and create jobs. This is the first time the council will meet outside Washington, D.C.

Confirmed attendees include Steve Case, co-founder of America Online and founder of the Case Foundation; Gururaj “Desh” Deshpande, chairman of Sparta Group LLC and founder of the Deshpande Foundation and the Deshpande Center for Technological Innovation at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology; Mary Sue Coleman, president of the University of Michigan and a UNC-Chapel Hill alumna and vice chancellor for research; and  Ping Fu, co-founder, chairman, president and CEO, Geomagic, in Research Triangle Park.

Media availability
: Locke and some council members will be available for media interviews for 30 minutes immediately following the meeting.

Seating/parking:
A limited number of seats and parking spaces have been reserved for media. Media representatives who plan to cover the event should contact Susan Houston (919-962-8415, susan_houston@unc.edu) no later than 4:30 p.m. today (March 14).

Broadcasters:
A mult box will be available for audio feeds.
