Get REAL & HEEL, a University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill program for breast cancer patients, is hosting free community workshops for breast cancer survivors beginning Wednesday (Jan. 27) and an awareness fair at the women’s gymnastics meet on Feb. 20.

Get REAL & HEEL, a University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill program for breast cancer patients, is hosting free community workshops for breast cancer survivors beginning Wednesday (Jan. 27) and an awareness fair at the women’s gymnastics meet on Feb. 20.

Participants will learn strength-building exercises and techniques to foster positive emotions and monitor negative ones. Information on nutrition and weight management also will be provided.

Dates for the events are as follows:

  • Jan. 27 and Feb. 24 from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., 214 Broadway St., Durham, in partnership with CAARE, a nonprofit organization addressing health disparities. Call (919) 962-1222 to RSVP.
  • Feb. 12 from 8:30 a.m. to noon, Renaissance Hotel at North Hills, Raleigh. Brunch provided. Call (919) 784-3105 by Feb. 4 to RSVP.
  • Feb. 22, March 8 and March 22 from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m., Rex Cancer Center, 4420 Lake Boone Trail in Raleigh, in partnership with Rex Hospital. Call (919) 784-6495 to RSVP.

A breast cancer awareness fair will be held at the Blue and Pink Women’s Gymnastics Meet on Feb. 20 at 12:30 p.m. at Carmichael auditorium. Children’s events, arts and crafts and food will be available. Admission to the fair and the UNC vs. Pittsburgh competition at 2 p.m is free.

Get REAL & HEEL is directed by Diane Groff, Ph.D., associate professor, and Claudio Battaglini, Ph.D., assistant professor, both in the department of exercise and sport science in the College of Arts and Sciences. The program is a collaboration between the department and the UNC Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center.
