…John Kasarda is an airline analyst at the University of North Carolina. He says Birmingham officials should be worried because people don't necessarily use their hometown airport if they think they'll get a better deal nearby. "You have to think of that catchment area particularly as you go in the direction of Atlanta and there's a fair amount of overlap in that hour to hour and a half commute."

Rhodes scholar has Gaston ties

One of the college students selected to study at the University of Oxford in England on a Rhodes scholarship has family ties in Gastonia. Paul Shorkey, a senior at UNC Chapel Hill, has been named a 2011 Rhodes scholar. Shorkey’s mother, grandparents and aunt were all residents of Gastonia.

The Town of Chapel Hill issued a zoning compliance permit on Friday for the 140 West project, which will consist of condominiums, retail and parking on town-owned Parking Lot 5 at the intersections of Franklin, Church and Rosemary streets.

CMS Passes Advanced Course Fees On To Families

For the first time, students in Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools have to pay fees to take final exams in some advanced classes. …Even with the fees, high scores on AP and IB classes can pay off, allowing students to get credit for college courses. The average cost of a single course at UNC-Chapel Hill is $570. CMS students can still take AP or IB classes and choose not to take the special exams, but they won't be eligible for college credits.
