The late North Carolina author Tim McLaurin will be remembered with a panel discussion, film screening and music at 3 p.m. Nov. 7 in The Barn at Fearrington Village in Pittsboro.

Writers Clyde Edgerton, Jill McCorkle, Lee Smith and Bland Simpson will be among those to speak about McLaurin and his work. The program will include reminiscences by McLaurin's family and friends, a screening of the short film “The Rough South: The Stories of Tim McLaurin” and music performed by The Band That Never Was. The band includes Edgerton and Simpson, who also is a Bowman and Gordon Gray Distinguished Term Professor of English and Creative Writing at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

The free public program will be co-sponsored by UNC’s Friends of the Library, where McLaurin’s papers are kept in the Southern Historical Collection of the Wilson Special Collections Library. Marvin Hunt, associate professor of English at North Carolina State University and a UNC alumnus, organized the event.

Also sponsoring are the North Carolina State University English department and McIntyre’s Books at Fearrington Village, which is eight miles south of Chapel Hill off U.S. 15-501 on the left. For information, contact Liza Terll of Friends of the Library at liza_terll@unc.edu or (919) 962-4207.

McLaurin, who died of esophageal cancer in 2002 at the age of 48, wrote five novels; the memoirs “Keeper of the Moon: A Southern Boyhood” and “The River Less Run;” and the narrative poem “Lola.” His novel “Cured by Fire” won the state’s 1995 Sir Walter Raleigh Award for Fiction.

McLaurin grew up on a small family farm in Fayetteville, a city that he chronicled in much of his writing. He graduated from UNC in 1985 with a journalism degree. His varied career included time as a U.S. Marine, Peace Corps volunteer in Tunisia, carpenter, truck driver, snake handler and professor of creative writing at NCSU.
