Miles for Smiles, the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Dentistry student organization, will hold its third annual Cleft Palate Gallop 5K at 9 a.m., Sept. 25., on the UNC campus.
Race proceeds benefit the UNC Craniofacial Center.
The 5- kilometer (3.1-mile) run will begin at the Old Well and end at Bynum Circle, also on Cameron Avenue. Prizes will be awarded to the top three male and female finishers, and additional raffle prizes will be given away immediately following the race. A family fun walk of about 1.2 miles is also offered.
Online race registration is $15 and is available at www.cleftpalategallop.com through 5 p.m. Sept. 24. Participants can also register in person the morning of the race for $20. All registrants will receive a T-shirt on race day.
Last year’s race raised almost $4,000 to benefit the center’s multidisciplinary and comprehensive care for patients with cleft lip, cleft palate and other craniofacial anomalies. More than 240 people registered for the 2009 race.
“This annual event has become the main focus of the Miles for Smiles organization because we take great pride in UNC’s exceptional craniofacial center,” said Summer Caldwell, Miles for Smiles president and UNC dental student. “It warms our hearts to see members of the community, including some of our young patients and their families, come together to support such rewarding care for patients who cannot meet its considerable financial demands.”
