Joseph Haj, producing artistic director of PlayMakers Repertory Company, has been appointed to the board of directors of Theatre Communications Group (TCG).

PlayMakers is the professional theater in residence in the College of Arts and Sciences at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Haj has led the theater’s artistic and administrative operations since 2006. He is a 1988 master’s in fine arts graduate of UNC’s professional actor training program.

TCG is the national organization for the American theater, fostering communication among nearly 700 professional, community and university theaters and affiliated organizations, as well as more than 12,000 individuals. TCG provides leadership, networking and knowledge-building opportunities; advocates on the federal level and connects its members to the global theater community. The organization also awards more than $2 million annually in grants to theater companies and individual artists.

TCG works to support and increase the efficiency of its member theaters, cultivate and celebrate the artistic achievements of the theatrical field and promote understanding of and appreciation for the American theater. It was honored with the 2005 Tony Award for Excellence in Theatre in recognition of its impact and contributions. 

The board of directors provides leadership to an industry which employees more than 131,000 people, produces more than 202,000 performances each year, and contributes more than $1.9 billion to the U.S. economy annually. Haj will collaborate with other leaders in the field, from playwrights and theater artists to representatives from other major theater companies.
