The School of Journalism and Mass Communication at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill finished first overall in the Intercollegiate Competition of the Hearst Journalism Awards, known as the Pulitzers of college journalism. The Hearst Corporation announced the awards last week at a ceremony in New York City.
The first-place finish resulted from cumulative points earned by 11 UNC students who placed in monthly writing, photojournalism, broadcast and multimedia competitions during the 2009-2010 school year.
The school received second place honors nationally in both the broadcast news and multimedia categories and third place in photojournalism in the Intercollegiate Competition. No other school placed in the top three in three of the four overall Hearst competitions.
“This win represents the broad strengths of Carolina journalism,” said Jean Folkerts, dean of the journalism school. “Our immensely talented students, under the guidance of dedicated faculty members, continue to excel and innovate, and this award recognizes that.”
This is the third time since 2000 – when Hearst began awarding the overall Intercollegiate Competition championship – that Carolina placed first.
Individually, Will Gorham, a senior from Pinehurst, was runner-up in the national competition in the radio news broadcast category.
