Faculty Poaching at Chapel Hill Leads to Exodus of Talent to Richer Peers (Blog)
The Chronicle of Higher Education

College officials often complain that budget cuts, particularly those affecting faculty salaries and benefits, will hamper their ability to fend off raids on faculty talent staged by rich competitors. Most of the time, though, such complaints cite merely anecdotal evidence of lost professors. Now the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill has compiled data to back up the anecdotes.

NC tax tussle questions what's fair for companies
The Associated Press

North Carolina could lose hundreds of millions of dollars if lawmakers take away the threat of some big penalties against tax-avoiding companies, the state's top tax collector said Wednesday. …Douglas Shackelford, a taxation professor at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill's Kenan-Flagler Business School, said he tends to agree with Clodfelter. "I could understand the logic of why the Department of Revenue would want to have that stick in its arsenal," said Shackelford, a former tax consultant who is not involved in the dispute. "But it seems to me overbearing for a company to be hit with a penalty if they didn't even know they had a liability that would trigger the penalty."

Breastfeeding & Feminism
"The State of Things" WUNC-FM

A provision in the new health care legislation aims to make it easier for new mothers to return to work and continue to nurse their babies. The provision revives a long-simmering debate in the field of feminist scholarship about the impact of breastfeeding on the status of women. Some say it shackles women to a life of domesticity, some say it is the personal duty of a “good” mother and others suggest both arguments are short-sighted. Host Frank Stasio discusses how something so personal became so political with: …Alison Stuebe, Maternal-Fetal Medicine physician and professor at UNC-Chapel Hill…

Package moves despite UNC findings
The Herald-Sun (Durham)

Boosters of an economic development package that cleared a House committee Wednesday said it will help bring good jobs to the state and perk up the ailing tax base — even though a UNC Chapel Hill study argues a portion of the tax breaks that would be extended are no longer effective. …The North Carolina Center for Competitive Economies, an organization linked to the UNC Chapel Hill business school, presented a report to lawmakers in early 2009 arguing that incentives previously under the state's William S. Lee Act should be allowed to expire.

UNC computer resources 'at risk'
The Herald-Sun (Durham)

As the number of cyber attacks on UNC increases, its IT data and resources could be at great risk because of outdated policies and decentralized practices, a recent state audit of the state's flagship university found. The performance audit of UNC's Information Technology Services Department found seven shortcomings that make its vast array of electronic data and technology vulnerable to security threats, the most serious of which is the university's failure to operate and manage centralized IT resources.

UNC system leaders working to curb state budget cuts
The Associated Press

University of North Carolina President Erskine Bowles said they planned for a possible 2 percent cut but that anything more than that would affect academics. …Bowles says the budget plan effectively caps enrollment at the system's 16 higher education campuses. "Fully understanding the impacts of these reductions will take some time," Bowles said in a statement. "In all of our previous analyses, we never imagined that reductions would reach this level."
